For the past five years, Iowa has celebrated Iowa GSA Day during the last week of January. This year, we're taking it national! For the first time ever, there will be a national celebration of GSA Day on January 25, 2012!

GSA Day was started as a way to celebrate and honor our high school and college GSAs. Studies show that students who have a Gay-Straight Alliance in their school report decreased absenteeism and lower rates of name calling, harassment and assault. For decades, GSAs have been working to make their campuses safe places for all students regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Students who start and take part in these student groups are brave. They dare to create a dialogue to improve lives. We believe that courage deserves to be recognized, to be celebrated!

The AIDS Project of Central Iowa and Iowa Pride Network are proud to announce

$500 GRANTS FOR HIV/STD EDUCATION

Three Iowa high school Gay-Straight Alliances (GSA) will receive $500 grants for creative educational projects related to HIV/STD risk and prevention. The deadline for grant applications is December 1, 2011 at 5pm.

HIRES OUTREACH COORDINATOR

DES MOINES— Iowa Pride Network has hired Dana Stuehling as its Outreach Coordinator. Dana is a 2011 graduate of Smith College in Northampton, MA where she studied Sociology, focusing on race, gender and sexuality. Dana will be responsible for enhancing Iowa Pride Network’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth leadership and organizing projects and providing outreach to Gay-Straight Alliances.

“As an anti-oppression activist, this is a perfect fit for me. It's extremely important that we challenge discrimination and oppression. Iowa Pride Network provides the vehicle for our students to understand social justice and I am proud to work with them in creating a more welcoming state for all people,” said Dana.

During her tenure at Smith, Dana worked with Students for Social Justice and Institutional Change and co-chaired the working group, Queers and Allies; both groups focused on working for LGBT rights within the college community and at a national level. As a student, Dana acted as a resource for local GSAs, the local domestic violence shelter, the Smith Community Service Office, and with cultural bridges to justice™, a national consortium of anti-oppression trainers.

“We are thrilled to have Dana as our Outreach Coordinator. Her expertise and organizing experience will allow us to grow the network and enhance our programs to meet the needs of our students across Iowa,” said Ryan Roemerman, Iowa Pride Network Executive Director.

Iowa Students Respond to the Murder of Marcellus Andrews

IOWA STUDENTS RESPOND TO THE MURDER OF MARCELLUS RICHARD ANDREWS

Des Moines, Iowa– August 25 – Iowa Pride Network’s Leadership Team, made up of high school and college students from across Iowa issued a statement today regarding the brutal killing of 19 year old Marcellus Richard Andrews in Waterloo, Iowa.

“This Sunday, many of us were getting ready for our first day of classes. However, as we all now know, one person was not. Upon hearing the story of Marcellus Richard Andrews, we were deeply disturbed that such violence and persecution happened here in the state of Iowa; however we were not entirely surprised that this sort of incident happened. We know firsthand that discrimination and bigotry both exist here, as in other places in the nation, despite our outward progressive appearance.

Let us not as citizens become so naïve as to think occurrences such as these are confined to places that are always elsewhere and never “here,” ever close to home. This has served as a reminder that the fight for equality is not over. We as youth need to vocalize what is happening in our schools and communities to better ensure the safety of all. We need to report every incident, every time so that issues such as these do not go unnoticed. By bringing these issues to the forefront people can become educated and help eliminate tragic events like this one. It is our hope that one day all youth will feel safe to live out in the open, as who they truly are.”

IPN to Present at First Federal LGBT Youth Summit

PRESENT AT FIRST-EVER FEDERAL LGBT YOUTH SUMMIT IN D.C.

Des Moines, Iowa– June 2 – Iowa Pride Network has been invited to the nation’s capital to present at the first-ever Federal Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Youth Summit on June 6 and 7th.

Iowa Pride Network is a statewide nonprofit organization working to make schools and colleges safe for all students by empowering students to combat bullying, homophobia, tranphobia, and hate. The network has become a nationally recognized leader in student leadership development and safe school policies.

Ryan Roemerman, Executive Director of Iowa Pride Network will present on a policy panel discussing strategies to improve public policy at the state, local and national levels to create safe and suppotive learning environments for LGBT youth.

Erin Kraber and Alexandra Nassif, both students at the University of Iowa and Sarah Mowitz, recent Roosevelt High School graduate, will co-present a workshop with the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance entitled, "The Power of Youth Leadership in Passing and Implementing Enumerated Bullying Policies at the District and State Level."

“We’re proud to be invited to participate in this historic summit and for the opportunity to highlight Iowa’s pioneering work regarding safe school policy and student leadership,” stated Roemerman.

Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius will kick off the two day summit along with Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan.

The Iowa Pride Network Leadership Team and Youth Council is a diverse group of youth leaders from college and high schools all over Iowa. As a member of the Leadership Team and Youth Council you will learn skills to become a stronger activist and work towards creating a safer climate at your school for LGBTQ youth and straight allies. You will get support around creating a campaign, event planning or starting a GSA club on your campus. In addition, members are responsible for giving input and helping guide the programs of the Iowa Pride Network. Members will represent the needs of college GSAs and youth activists from their campus as well as plan events and lead peer to peer workshops, leadership trainings, conferences and other organizing projects.

In addition you'll have opportunity to:

o Help plan and run youth led conferences or present workshops at local and national conferences

o Plan and participate in Iowa Pride Network social activities

o Apply to become a peer-to-peer youth trainer

o Discuss emerging trends in the LGBTQ and greater social justice movement

o Provide occasional technical assistance to other GSAs

We are very excited to announce that we’re currently in production of our official podcast which will appropriately be known as Pridecast. This weekly audio podcast will help us keep students up-to-date on IPN events and other happening across Iowa and be available to anyone, anywhere, at any time. This will also allow us to connect with like minded persons throughout the country and around the globe!!

This is a very exciting project for us!! The most exciting part will be YOUR involvement. This is YOUR podcast. This is YOUR voice. We have an idea of what the podcast will sound like, but we are more interested in what YOU want to hear. What’s going to make the podcast interesting for you? What will keep you involved week after week?

The last few months have been spent in development and the first show will be released during the first week of June 2011!! So, during the next couple weeks, we NEED YOUR HELP! Send us your topic ideas, segment ideas, and show ideas!!

"Make it Better, Iowa" Project Launches!

About the Project

The mission of the project is to use theatre training and storytelling to help make Iowa a better place for LGBT youth to grow up. Make it Better, Iowa is a collaboration between Working Group Theatre, The UI Center for Human Rights, and Iowa Pride Network with support from Prairie Lights Bookstore and Hotel Vetro. It is divided into 3 parts. Read about them below to find out how you can be a part of Make it Better, Iowa.

Part One: The Training

Theatre Training for WGT Company members with Dr. Karen Mitchell, a Theatre of the Oppressed/Forum Theatre specialist from the University of Northern Iowa. Don’t know about Theatre of the Oppressed? Dont know about the Theatre of the Oppressed? Read up.

Part Two: The Workshop

April 2nd: 9am-12pm, 1:30pm-4:00pm

WGT and UICHR will offer a free public workshop, open to anyone who works with LGBT youth and is interested in using theatre as a tool to combat oppression and facilitate discussion. Part Three: The Event

IOWA CITY— Working Group Theatre has teamed up with The University of Iowa Center for Human Rights, Iowa Pride Network, Prairie Lights Bookstore, and The Hotel Vetro to present Make it Better, Iowa. It will be held Sunday, April 17th at 4pm in the Hotel Vetro’s Grand Ballroom. The event will feature a theatrical performance, personal storytelling and a Skyped in appearance by Dan Savage who will be talking about the release of “It Gets Better” the book. Prairie Lights will have the book available for purchase at the event and a portion of all proceeds will go to the Iowa Pride Network and United Action for Youth. Admission is free and open to the public.

Zach Wahls to Keynote GSA Conference

Zach Wahls, University of Iowa student will be one of Iowa Pride Network's keynote speakers at this year's Gay-Straight Alliance Conference to be held at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa on April 23rd. The son of two lesbian mothers is known for his speech to the Iowa House of Representatives defending their right to marry. Recently Zach was seen on the Ellen Degeneres Show and The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC.

Admission to the GSA Conference is FREE and also includes a keynote from Danielle Askini, Transgender Rights Activist and National Program Manager of the National Association of GSA Networks. The conference will end with a concert by Leslie Hall and her band, Leslie and the LYs. The concert is free for conference attendees and $10 for the public)

The individual’s or organization’s achievements to date will be key to the selection committee’s appraisal; promise for ongoing advancement of their work will be considered.

Nominee Criteria and Eligibility:

Award winners will have an exceptional record of substantive, innovative contributions in educational initiatives that have bettered the lives of students in Iowa.
In keeping with Iowa Pride Network’s mission, award winners will support the full equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Award winners must be nominated by a third party.
Award winners must participate in Iowa Pride Network’s awards ceremony at the annual Spring Soiree and Honors Benefit on April 28^th, 2011 in downtown Des Moines.

COLLEGE CLIMATE SURVEY

First Study of Iowa College and University Campuses Show

Gaps in Support and Areas of Opportunity

Des Moines, IA – February 16 – Iowa Pride Network announced findings from its first ever Iowa College Climate Survey (ICCS) today at Drake University. The survey is the organization’s first to examine life on college and university campuses for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight allied (LGBTA) identified students.

“The ICCS reveals that harassment remains commonplace on college campuses across the state,” said Iowa Pride Network Co-Founder and Executive Director, Ryan Roemerman; “But it also makes clear that faculty, staff and administration can make a difference.”

Some of the key findings from the ICCS reveal:

· Verbal harassment and lack of intervention is common:

82% to 95% of students have heard racist, sexist, homophobic comments or negative comments about gender expression from students on campus. When these comments are made, respondents say very few professors or students intervene.

· Unsafe campus climates affect both LGBT and straight students:

LGBT students face more physical harassment, because of sexual orientation or gender expression, more cyber-harassment and are 25% more likely to consider suicide than their straight peers. Straight students experience more harassment because of their gender than LGBT students, while 44% of all respondents reported experiencing sexual harassment within the past year.

· Anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies matter:

Students who attend a college or university feel safer if they know that their institution has an anti-harassment and non-discrimination policy; and even more safe if they know how to report harassment and discrimination. Additionally, policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity also make LGBT students feel safer.

· Supportive staff and resources create safer institutions

Colleges and universities that had staff that are viewed to be “supportive” or “very supportive” of LGBT students had fewer students reporting verbal harassment, physical harassment, assault, or cyber-harassment.

College and university students were on hand at the press conference and detailed their experiences as an LGBT or straight allied individual in an Iowa college. Stephen Wayne Boatwright, a freshman at Des Moines Area Community College, spoke of his transition to college. “I realized that my safety now lied in the hands of whatever university I chose and it made me research that university’s policies, which ultimately helped me make my decision.”

Thao Pham, a sophomore at Iowa State University, explained a time when she personally encountered discrimination towards her sexual orientation while living in the dorms, “Regardless of the great policies that my school has on discrimination and harassment, there’s still a huge bureaucracy when it comes to reporting.”

“In a large school with a population of least 20,000 students, anonymity can be an issue and the discrimination and harassment that occurs may be overlooked. Training for RA’s and professors and educating college students early in their enrollment about how to name and stop hate and bias is important.”

At the press conference, Iowa Pride Network called upon colleges to:

· Meaningfully implement and enforce inclusive anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies that have clear instructions for reporting;

· Engage faculty, staff, students and community members to appropriately intervene when bias and hate occur, wherever they occur, every time; and finally,

· Colleges and Universities must exhibit on-going institutional support for LGBT students through student engagement, data, resources and support.

“My hope is that with the Iowa College Climate Survey, we are more aware of the kinds of issues LGBT students face in Iowa colleges,” Pham said, “And can initiate a dialogue about how to improve the climate on campus.”

The Iowa College Climate Survey included responses from 276 LGBT, allied and non-allied high school students from 31 public, private and community colleges across the state. This biennial statewide survey is the only survey that measures the levels of racism, homophobia and sexism in Iowa colleges and universities. A Day to Honor and Celebrate Student Groups that Work to End

Violence and Harassment in Schools and Colleges

Des Moines, IA – January 26 – Today is “Iowa Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) Day”. The day, organized by Iowa Pride Network, is meant to honor GSA groups, students and staff who work to end violence and homophobia in Iowa schools and colleges.

“Having a GSA is a simple, cost-effective way to create safe schools,” stated Joshua Merritt, Iowa Pride Network Outreach Coordinator. “That is why having a day that raises awareness of GSAs and the positive impact they have on schools and colleges is so important.”

Hundreds of students from dozens of secondary schools and colleges are expected to take part in activities to address the serious problems of anti-gay bullying and harassment, while advocating for solutions - like GSAs and implementation of Iowa’s Safe School and amended Civil Rights laws.

Sarah Mowitz, a senior at Roosevelt High School and Iowa Pride Network board member, is part of a GSA at her high school. “The point of the GSA is to make students think twice before using anti-gay slurs or other forms of harassment. There are students out there who get picked on for being gay or being perceived to be. This day let’s them know that they aren’t alone and that they’re supported.”

The event, now in its fifth year, continues to gain momentum. Four years ago Iowa had approximately 50 GSAs, today more than 100 exist. Iowa is the only state in the nation with such a day. “We’re proud of the impact our GSAs have made across the state and appreciate the efforts of students and staff who work tirelessly to create safe schools,” stated Mowitz.

Danielle Askini to Keynote GSA Conference

Danielle went to high school in Southern Maine where she worked tirelessly as a youth educator and activist to change school climate through GSAs. She is a former foster youth, who worked for a number of years with other foster youth to change state and federal policies affecting young people in the child welfare system.

She is a successful graduate of a pilot program in Maine to waive in-sate tuition for youth-in-foster care, a law she helped pass. She obtained her MSW from the University of Southern Maine where she also went for her undergraduate education in social work and gender studies. Her work has focused on ending discrimination against LGBT young people, rights for youth-in-foster care, ending hate crimes, immigration rights, and HIV education.

Before she became the Program Manager for the National Association of GSA Networks, Danielle worked in Seattle at Verbena Health providing culturally competent care to LGBTQ clients, and the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence in Portland, Maine.

Ryan Roemerman co-founded Iowa Pride Network when he was a student at the University of Iowa and led the effort to establish and LGBT center on campus. Ryan has since developed IPN into a nationally recognized state organization. IPN Attends National Safe Schools Roundtable

Recently, Iowa Pride Network traveled to Minneapolis, MN to attend the 2010 National Safe Schools Roundtable (NSSR).

The packed 2.5 days delved into the current state of the LGBTQ safe schools movement.

Amidst the work we did at NSSR, we had the opportunity to meet with Sen. Al Franken, sponsor of the Student Non-Discrimination Act. We also met with with Joe Wardenski from the U.S. Department of Justice about ensuring legal protections for transgender youth, and Stacey Horn, Program Director, M.Ed. in Youth Development in the UIC Department of Education, about cutting edge safe schools research.

We also benefited from the wealth of expertise of the other participants such as the Southern Poverty Law Center, aMaze, Anti-Defamation League, National Black Justice Coalition, Alabama Safe Schools Coalition, Idaho Safe Schools Coalition, GLSEN, Family Equality Council, National Youth Advocacy Coalition, ACLU LGBT Rights Project, Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition and many others!

Bishop Gene Robinson Steps Down

On Tuesday, V. Gene Robinson, the first openly gay Episcopal bishop, announced his resignation from leading his diocese. Robinson still plans to be a bishop, but feeling the stress of both leading a parish and serving as a gay rights icon, this decision was made for his health as much as anything.

Robinson has been a trailblazer for the LGBT community for years now, adding an open voice to the religious community and creating a much-needed conversation within the Anglican Communion (not to mention other Christian denominations). Ever since starting as a bishop, Robinson has received countless death threats and hateful messages.

Robinson assures the community that he’s not “being run off” by those who have always opposed him. Instead, he’s retiring to focus on his ministry in New Hampshire, though he still plans to be engaged in “trying to achieve full and equal rights for gay, lesbian, transgendered, and bisexual people.”

We only wish the best for Robinson in his decisions, and thank him for all of the hard work he’s done for the nation!

IPN to Hold 10/20/10 Vigil to Make it Better

In memory of those who have died because of anti-gay bullying and harassment, Iowa Pride Network will be holding a vigil on October 20th at 7:30 pm at the West Capitol Terrace (the park/steps just west of the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines). The vigil also serves as a call to action to make our schools and communities safe for all students.

MAKE A SIGN: If you plan to attend we encourage you to make a sign briefly describing what you will do to help stop bullying (example: I will stand up for friends that are harassed, I am an ally of LGBT people, I will start a Gay-Straight Alliance, etc.). And, if you are comfortable, please also include your name, and a noun that describes you (example: student, teacher, parent, etc.). At the end, you may donate your sign for a future display designed to show there are many things that friends, family and allies can do to stop bullying.

PLEASE WEAR PURPLE. On this date, thousands of people across America will be wearing purple in memory of those who have been bullied and those who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse.

Please come to show your support for ending bullying and anti-gay violence and remembering the lives that were lost in the past few weeks: Billy Lucas, Seth Walsh, Tyler Clementi, Asher Brown, Raymond Chase, and others.

As Ellen Degeneres stated, "One life lost is a tragedy. [Five] is a crisis". Join us to show that the state of Iowa cannot and will not stand for ANY disrespect and bigotry in our schools or in our communities.

IPN to Disucss Bullying/Suicide on IPR Tomorrow

Iowa Pride Network Executive Director Ryan Roemerman will be on Iowa Public Radio's "Talk of Iowa" program tomorrow morning (October 5th) to discuss bullying and suicide prevention.

A string of recent news stories surrounding anti-gay bullying and teen suicide has increased awareness of this growing problem. Roemerman will spotlight data from the 2009 Iowa School Climate Survey and what Iowa's students, teachers, families and communities can do to help.

The program will also discuss the "It Gets Better" Project, created in response to the suicide of 15-year-old Indiana teenager Billy Lucas, who hanged himself in his family's barn after enduring bullying from his classmates. Writer Dan Savage is reaching out to LGBT teenagers to let them know life may be difficult now, but "it gets better."

IPR's Charity Nebbe will speak with Savage; Roemerman; and Jeremy Youde of the University of Minnesota at Duluth from 10 to 11am on WOI 640 AM Radio in Ames/Des Moines and WSUI 910 AM Radio in Iowa City/Cedar Rapids.

Asher Brown (pictured above) an eighth-grader, killed himself last week. He shot himself in the head after enduring what his mother and stepfather say was constant harassment from four other students at Hamilton Middle School in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District. Brown, his family said, was "bullied to death" — picked on for his small size, his religion and because he did not wear designer clothes and shoes. Kids also accused him of being gay, some of them performing mock gay acts on him in his physical education class, his mother and stepfather said.

Maquoketa Student Creates "Gay is Okay Day"

MAQUOKETA, Iowa - A T-shirt is causing confusion at Maquoketa High School. It has the word “gay” on it- and administrators say they couldn’t tell if the shirt was making fun of or supporting gay rights.

Early last week Ali Lai wore a shirt to school that read “I Heart Lady Gay Gay.” Lai said, “I mean “gay” that’s not inappropriate. At least I don’t think it’s inappropriate. But it could catch the eye of some people and make them mumble a few words.”

He says the shirt is in reference to Pop Star Lady Gaga, who’s also an activist for gay rights.

The school’s Assistant Principal told Lai to change his shirt or turn it inside out. The Superintendent stands by that decision. But admits, administrators didn’t know what the expression meant. Superintendent Kim Huckstadt said, “Not knowing if it was an item that was either in support of or if it was actually derogatory.”

Another student thinks this is an example of Maquoketa High School violating a student’s rights. So, she organized what she’s calling “gay is okay day”.

Michigan Asst. AG Targets Gay College Student

ANN ARBOR (WXYZ) - Andrew Shirvell has fought battles in courtrooms throughout the state, but it’s a fight he’s picked with an openly gay college student that has some wondering if this attorney is out of order.

In classroom’s across the state, Attorney General Mike Cox uses videos to teach students the dangers of internet predators and cyber bullies.

“We want you to be safe on the Internet, and in particular, we want to protect you from Internet predators,” said Cox in the video.

But is one of his top lieutenants engaging in cyber bullying, the very behavior Cox says is so dangerous. Andrew Shirvell is an assistant attorney general who helped run Cox’s last re-election campaign. But on his own time, he’s the author of a blog he started last spring targeting Chris Armstrong, the openly gay president of the University of Michigan’s student assembly.

Washington, D.C. – August 13 – Iowa Pride Network, along with the Iowa Department of Education, was invited to the nation’s capital to present at the first-ever Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention Summit.

Ryan Roemerman, Executive Director of Iowa Pride Network and Amy J. Williamson, Education Program Consultant with the Iowa Department of Education, co-presented on strategies to help schools implement safe school laws with fidelity.

“We’re proud to be invited to participate in the summit and for the opportunity to highlight Iowa’s pioneering work regarding safe school policy,” stated Roemerman.

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan kicked off the two day summit along with the department’s Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools Kevin Jennings and Assistant Secretary for the Office for Civil Rights Russlynn Ali.

Administrator Mary Wakefield of the Health Resources and Services Administration; Surgeon General Regina M. Christian Legal Society v. Martinez Ruling Can Help Colleges and Universities Stop Intolerance

Des Moines, IA – June 28 – Iowa Pride Network is hailing the United States Supreme Court’s ruling in the case of Christian Legal Society v. Martinez. The ruling articulates that public colleges and universities do not have to support student groups that violate their non-discrimination policies.

The Christian Legal Society (CLS) had sued the University of California’s Hastings College of the Law for funding and recognition after they were denied. The university has a non-discrimination policy stating that no recognized campus groups may exclude people due to religious belief or sexual orientation—which the CLS was effectively doing. The CLS requires that voting members sign a statement of faith and specifically targets gays, lesbians and their allies from joining as they are “participating in or advocating for an unrepentant sexually immoral lifestyle.”

The debate had centered on whether or not denying CLS violated the group’s First Amendment rights of association, free speech and free exercise. The Supreme Court found that the group’s rights were not violated.

"In requiring CLS – in common with all other student organizations – to choose between welcoming all students and forgoing the benefits of official recognition, we hold, Hastings did not transgress constitutional limitations," said Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who wrote the majority opinion.

“The CLS has numerous chapters nationwide and has bullied many public colleges and universities into going against their own non-discrimination policies in order to avoid lawsuits,” stated Ryan Roemerman, Executive Director of Iowa Pride Network, a non-profit organization that networks and provides resources to high school and college Gay-Straight Alliances.

In November, 2008 Iowa Pride Network expressed its concern that the University of Iowa violated its own policy on Human Rights with the approval of funding to CLS.

“Originally, members of the UI Student Government committee that allocates fees for student groups denied CLS funding based on its mission that violated the University of Iowa’s Human Rights Policy. Unfortunately, when threatened with a lawsuit, the Administration was bullied into reversing the decision” said Roemerman.

The CLS and its legal counsel have threatened lawsuits in Iowa before. In the fall of 2007, this same type of controversy erupted on Iowa State University’s campus after conservative Christian groups tried to persuade Iowa State’s administration into allowing varying degrees of discrimination into ISU’s student organization policies. At that time, the ISU Student Government passed a resolution, “opposing the accommodation of any violation to the University’s non-discrimination policy.”

“We hope that today’s ruling gives colleges and universities the courage to stand up to groups like CLS and makes clear that equitable and inclusive non-discrimination policies are crucial in creating safe and healthy campuses for our students” stated Roemerman.

Des Moines, IA – April 26 – Principal Financial ®, Representative Roger Wendt and two Iowa Gay-Straight Alliances have been announced as honorees for the annual Spring Soiree & Honors Benefit, to be held on April 29, at the Historic Kirkwood in downtown Des Moines. Proceeds will benefit Iowa Pride Network (IPN).

Principal Financial ® has been a longtime supporter of IPN, and will receive the “Leader in Progress Award” for helping fund IPN programs that better the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight allied (LGBTA) students throughout Iowa.

Representative Roger Wendt will receive the inaugural award named in his honor for his role in serving as lead sponsor of Iowa’s historic 2007 Safe Schools Law. The Wendt Award will honor those who champion efforts that better the lives of students in Iowa.

Two Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs), one high school and one college will be named as Iowa’s best, the night of the event. Des Moines, IA – April 22 – Iowa Pride Network (IPN) expressed its appreciation for the work of its Outreach Coordinator, Rachel Johnson, who will be departing the organization at the end of June. Johnson has served as Outreach Coordinator since August 1, 2007. Johnson assisted in the development of IPN’s portfolio of programs which have become nationally recognized.

A search for IPN’s next Outreach Coordinator will begin shortly. Johnson will assist in training the newly hired coordinator to ensure a smooth transition.

“Rachel has been involved with IPN since 2004 when she attended our first college coalition meeting. Her work for us the past three years as Outreach Coordinator has produced amazing results in helping to better the lives of all students in Iowa,” stated Ryan Roemerman, Executive Director. While in college, Johnson was the spokesperson for IPN’s first “Student Day at the Capitol” where she implored legislators to pass a Safe Schools Law to protect all students, including those that are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT). The law passed in 2007.

Under Johnson’s leadership as IPN Outreach Coordinator, the number of Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) increased by 40% and the sustainability of those groups nearly doubled. Johnson also doubled the number of GSA Coalitions in the state, establishing new coalitions in rural Iowa. An accompanying GSA Coalition curriculum was created to fill the information gap by empowering youth with knowledge about their history, community, identity and culture. In 2007, only 16% of Iowa’s LGBT youth had ever heard about LGBT people, history or events in their schools. The curriculum increased student’s knowledge and understanding of these issues an average of 35%.

“I’m going to miss all the amazing students I’ve had the honor to work with over the years. Their experiences have shown me how vital is it to have an organization like IPN available to youth,” stated Johnson. “I’m eager to see where the organization will go in the years to come and have no doubt IPN will continue to triumph in its efforts to secure and uphold the rights of LGBTA youth and work to make sure they feel represented and safe in their schools. I will always remain an advocate for the rights and equality of Iowa’s LGBTA youth and will never forget what they have taught me.”

“I know our board of directors, supporters and students will miss Rachel, but are also excited to see what she takes on next,” described Roemerman. “Rachel has played, and will continue to play, a key role in the LGBT movement in Iowa and beyond."

International Expert to Discuss LGBT Refugee Protection April 13

director of the Organization for Refuge,

Asylum & Migration (ORAM), will give

a talk on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and

Transgender (LGBT) refugees from

12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 13,

in Room 1117 of the University Capitol

Centre (International Commons). Light

refreshments will be served. The event

is free and open to the public.

Grungras' talk is titled "Is the

International Protection Regime Failing the World's Most Vulnerable

Individuals?" Grungras is an internationally known expert in matters

of LGBT refugee law and procedure, and ORAM is the first NGO

devoted to protecting LGBT refugees worldwide.



The lecture will present international law and procedure against an

analysis of ethno-cultural realities in the Global South. Grungras will

discuss the unprecedented violence against sexual minorities that

has occurred over the last year in several locations worldwide. These

acts, described by some as moral cleansing, drove thousands to escape

their home countries in search of safety.



This event is co-hosted by the University of Iowa Center for Human

Rights, a part of International Programs, the UI LGBT Resource

Center, the UI Department of Gender, Women's & Sexuality Studies,

and the Iowa City Human Rights Campaign.

They were shocked when they stepped on the University of Northern Iowa campus Monday morning, and saw their informational, and colorful, notes had been erased. LGBT Students More Likely to Be Cyber-Bullied

Recently, Iowa State University professor Warren Blumenfeld, lead the first-ever national study on cyber-bullying of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender youth.

The study found that the majority of harassment goes unreported, causes widespread depression and anxiety about attending school.

The 2009 Iowa School Climate Survey found similar findings:

LGBT students continue to be targeted for cyber-bulling at higher rates than their straight peers. LGBT students were:

• 2.03 times as likely to have been cyber-bullied sometime in the last year

Cyber-bullying increases thoughts of suicide. LGBT students were:

• 59% more likely to report having considered suicide if cyber-bullied because of their sexual orientation

Cyber-bullying affects gay and straight students alike, lowers attendance and increases absenteeism. Specifically, LGBT and straight respondents who had been cyber-bullied were:

• 3.88 times as likely to have skipped class, and;

• 3.03 times as likely to stay home from school

HUNTSVILLE, AL - Gay rights protesters on a bus tour made a stop at Oakwood University Monday. They're called Soulforce, and they're visiting Christian and conservative universities to protest their policies.

Soulforce members say Oakwood University's policies discriminate against gay and transgendered people.

Lt. Choi Arrested at White House Gates for Protesting DADT

You might remember that Lt. Dan Choi keynoted the Annual Governor's Conference on LGBT Youth here in Iowa in February. Well, this just in:

"In an act of civil disobedience, Lt. Dan Choi and Jim Pietrangelo have been arrested at the White House gates on Thursday while protesting the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Following a Human Rights Campaign rally for DADT repeal in Washington earlier today, Choi and Pietrangelo led about 100 protesters to the White House, where the two then proceeded to handcuff themselves to the gates."

College students who describe themselves as politically "far right" arrive on campuses across the country supporting legal same-sex marriage significantly more than do conservative Republicans nationwide, according to new data released by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Twenty-four percent of the most conservative college students say that same-sex couples should have the right to legal marital status, according to the institute's most recent survey of freshmen, conducted last summer and fall. In the nation at large, 14 percent of conservative Republicans support gay marriage, according to a survey conducted last year by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

Itawamba County, Miss., high school prom off after lesbian's date request

JACKSON, MISS. — A northern Mississippi school district decided Wednesday not to host a high school prom after a lesbian student demanded she be able to attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.

The Itawamba County school district’s policy requires that senior prom dates be of the opposite sex. The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi had given the district until Wednesday to change that policy and allow 18-year-old Constance McMillen to escort her girlfriend, who is also a student, to the dance on April 2.

Instead, the school board met and issued a statement announcing it wouldn’t host the event at Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton, “due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events.”

The statement didn’t mention McMillen or the ACLU. When asked by The Associated Press if McMillen’s demand led to the cancellation, school board attorney Michele Floyd said she could only reference the statement.

“It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors,” district officials said in the statement. “However, at this time, we feel that it is in the best interest of the Itawamba County School District, after taking into consideration the education, safety and well being of our students.”

Virginia Students Mobilize Against Anti-Gay Attorney General

Virginia college students began to mobilize Monday in response to a legal opinion from the state's attorney general saying Virginia's public colleges have no authority to ban discrimination against gay employees.

The letter from Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II, dated Thursday, was made public Friday, just as many state university students were leaving for Spring Break. The geographical hurdle has pushed much of the dissent online.

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has directed state agencies not to discriminate against gay people, essentially overriding the state attorney general's advice to colleges.

McDonnell's directive Wednesday came amid a public uproar over Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli's letter last week telling public colleges they lack the authority to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. Cuccinelli told colleges to rescind or change any anti-discrimination policies that include protection for gay people.

The Republican attorney general's letter was denounced by gay-rights groups and Democrats. In the letter, Cuccinelli said colleges can't include gays in their anti-discrimination policies without General Assembly authorization.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) and Straight Allied Students Will Take Part in Iowa Pride Network’s 5^th Annual Day at the Capitol

Des Moines, IA – March 3 – Dozens of LGBT and straight allied students will meet with Lt. Governor Patty Judge and supportive legislators during Iowa Pride Network’s Fifth Annual Student Day at Capitol. The day is meant to encourage students to be civically engaged and politically aware.

The event comes at an important time. In early February, House Representatives Jason Schultz, R-Schleswig and Matt Windschitl, R-Missouri Valley, co-sponsored legislation which sought to exclude LGBT students from the 2007 Safe Schools Law. The legislation died in the House Education Committee.

“While that piece of anti-gay legislation is dead, we hope that our time at the Capitol will serve as a reminder that every student has a right to a safe school and that all students deserve to be treated with respect—not just from their peers, but from their legislators at the statehouse,” stated Emily Frerichs, a senior at the University of Iowa and Iowa Pride Network Board Member.

“We also want to thank legislators who have stood by us and show we appreciate them,” said Sara Puffer, a senior at Cedar Rapids Linn-Mar High School and also a board member for Iowa Pride Network. Puffer described how personalized thank-you cards will be given out and a legislative reception will be held in the afternoon.

The Day at the Capitol brings students from numerous Iowa cities, colleges and high schools:

“When our state is facing record budget deficits and unemployment, House Republicans feel their time is best spent picking on Iowa’s LGBT youth,” said Ryan Roemerman, Executive Director of Iowa Pride Network. “There is no better example as to why we have this law, so youth in Iowa don’t grow up to be like these bigots.”

Gay NY teen's harassment suit gets federal notice

MOHAWK, N.Y. – The bullying by classmates and taunts of "homo" only got worse after Jacob began dyeing his hair and wearing eyeliner in eighth grade. One student scrawled "I hope you die" on his shoe, he said; another drew a pocket knife on him.

Jacob's grades dropped, and he missed school from fear. His father tried repeatedly to get school officials in their working-class village in upstate New York to help protect his son from harassment. The response by the Mohawk Central School District, according to a federal lawsuit, was to do "virtually nothing."

"Everything was bad," Jacob — who is identified as "J.L." in the lawsuit and didn't want to draw attention to his new school by having his last name used in this story — said this week. "I hyperventilated when I left the school ... and I didn't want to come back the next day, or ever."

The 15-year-old might soon get a measure of satisfaction. The lawsuit filed by Jacob and his father against the school district with the New York Civil Liberties Union could be close to settlement, according to both sides.

The negotiations come as the U.S. Department of Justice seeks to intervene in the case, citing the "important issues" it raises in enforcing federal civil rights laws.

Des Moines, IA – January 27 – Governor Culver has declared today “Iowa Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) Day”. The day, organized by Iowa Pride Network, is meant to honor GSA groups, students and staff who work to end violence and homophobia in Iowa schools and colleges.

"It is a known fact that Gay Straight Alliances make our schools safer and more accepting," said Lt. Governor Judge. "The Culver/Judge Administration and Iowa's outstanding Gay Straight Alliances share a common vision - ensuring that every Iowa student has a safe nurturing environment in which to learn, and we look forward to working with GSAs and all Iowans to turn this goal into a reality."

According to recent Iowa School Climate Surveys, nearly 38% of gay and lesbian students are physically harassed and 21% are physically assaulted in Iowa schools because of their sexual orientation. However, students with a GSA in their school are 23% less likely to be assaulted. “Having a GSA is a simple, cost-effective way to create safe schools,” stated Rachel Johnson, Iowa Pride Network Outreach Coordinator. “That is why having a day that raises awareness of GSAs and the positive impact they have on schools and colleges is so important.”

Stephen Wayne Boatwright, a senior at Hoover High School and Iowa Pride Network board member, helped create a GSA at his high school. “After we started the GSA at Hoover, more students are thinking twice before using anti-gay slurs. There are students out there who get picked on for being gay or being perceived to be. This day let’s them know that they aren’t alone and that they’re supported.”

The event, now in its fourth year, continues to gain momentum. Four years ago Iowa had approximately 50 GSAs, today over 120 exist. Iowa is the only state in the nation with such a day. “We’re proud of the impact our GSAs have made across the state and appreciate the state of Iowa recognizing our work,” stated Boatwright.

What is Iowa GSA Day?

Now in its fourth year, the goals of Iowa GSA Day are to:

• Honor GSAs around that state that work to end violence, homophobia and transphobia in Iowa schools and colleges;

• Honor students, teachers and community members that have shown dedication for keeping all students safe, and insuring a quality education for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity; and,

• Raise awareness of the need for GSAs in schools and colleges and how they are a proven, effective tool in combating hostile and unsafe learning environments for all students.

When is Iowa GSA Day and where is it held?

Iowa GSA Day will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 2010. Iowa GSA Day events will happen on high school and college campuses throughout the state.

I don’t have a GSA. Can I/my school/college still participate?

Yes! Any student, school or college can participate—even if you don’t have a GSA. We do ask that all students, schools and colleges register on our website (see info below). If you don’t yet have a GSA, participating in Iowa GSA Day is a great way to inform your administration about the need for a GSA and the benefits they bring to all students! Please call 515-471-8063 for more info on individual ways to be involved!

What is a GSA and how many are there in Iowa?

A Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is a student-run club, which provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other, and talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity, and work to end homophobia and transphobia. Many GSA's function as a support group and provide safety and confidentiality to students who are struggling with their identity as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ). The student group also serves as a voice for LGBTQ students and works to help the school become more inclusive and safe. Most GSAs in Iowa are made up of both straight identified students and LGBTQ students. Currently, there are approximately 100 active GSAs in Iowa’s high schools and colleges.

Do GSAs really work to end homophobia and violence?

Yes. GSAs decrease absenteeism, name-calling, harassment and assault. According to the 2007 Iowa School Climate Survey, LGBT students in schools WITH GSAs:

• 25% are less likely to be verbally harassed because of their gender

• 23% of LGBT students are less likely to skip class

• 23% are less likely to be physically assaulted because of their sexual orientation

• 21% are more likely to report never having been sexually harassed at school

• 12% are less likely to be physically harassed because of their gender expression

• 12% are less likely to be physically assaulted because of their gender expression

• 10% are less likely to be verbally harassed because of their gender expression

• 10% are less likely to be physically harassed because of their sexual orientation

• 10% more likely to report never being cyber-bullied because of their gender8% more likely to report being rarely cyber-bullied because of their sexual orientation or gender expression

How do we participate in Iowa GSA Day?

To participate, register your GSA with Iowa Pride Network at http://www.iowapridenetwork.org/. (Registration Forms for the day will be on our website shortly!) Simply click the “Iowa GSA Day” button and fill out the form and describe what your GSA is planning to do and why your GSA is important to you. Once you do this, your GSA is automatically entered to win DVDs, Books and other materials! Each GSA across the state can design activities to fit their school or college based on our three main areas of focus:

• Giving them a card or thank-you note.

• Show appreciation for your group by discussing your group’s history.

• Take the time to research your GSA’s history, or if you started it, write down your history and pass it on to new GSA leaders.

Understanding and appreciating where you’ve been will help the group feel confident in creating change for the future!

Sit down with your GSA and plan for the future. Ask GSA members:

• What are your goals for the GSA?

• What do you want to accomplish? Do you want to increase attendance, improve programming, or make your school safer?

• Do you know who next year’s leaders will be?

Answering these questions will ensure that your group is getting organized. Make sure you plan to attend Iowa Pride Network events and join a regional coalition. Look around. Are there other schools in your area that should have a GSA? If so, network with those schools and colleges and serve as a mentor to them. Make sure to inform Iowa Pride Network about the new GSAs—so that way, next year’s Iowa GSA Day can have an even bigger impact!

Notre Dame Newspaper Runs Deplorable Anti-Gay Cartoon

On Wednesday, 13 January, The Observer, the student newspaper at Notre Dame University ran an incredibly troubling cartoon that promotes violence against the LGBT community.

The cartoon depicted a conversation between two figures. The conversation read, “What’s the easiest way to turn a fruit into a vegetable?”

“No idea.”

“A baseball bat.”

As many people know, “fruit” is often used as a derogatory term for members of the LGBT community.

This type of advocacy of anti-LGBT violence must stop. It isn’t funny. What’s more, it promotes hate crimes, which are all too prevalent in society today. Read the entire article from GLAAD's Blog HERE.

Queer Youth Summit to be held Saturday

On Saturday, January 9, 2010, the Iowa Pride Network will be hosting its 3rd Annual Queer Youth Summit for high school and college students throughout the state. The training will be held in Des Moines at Drake University, Meredith Hall from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Check-in will begin at 9:00 AM, and the conference will start promptly at 10:00 AM. Lunch will be provided. This is a FREE event!

The mission of the Queer Youth Summit is to provide a safe forum for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied (LGBTA) students to discuss emerging issues in the LGBTA social justice movement and understand how their voices and action can create a more welcoming and affirming society. The Summit also aims to provide necessary tools and resources to students to ensure that their Gay-Straight Alliances (GSA) and student organizations are serving as catalysts for change.

The Iowa College Climate Survey is the first and only statewide survey to document the experiences of LGBT and straight allied students as well as the levels of racism and sexism in Iowa’s colleges and universities.

The survey is open to ALL and any student enrolled in an Iowa college or university (public or private, community college or vocational school). Regardless of whether you're a freshman, graduate student or non-traditional student--we need to hear from you!

First Study Since Safe Schools Law;
IPN Calls for Meaningful Implementation

Des Moines, IA – November 11 – Iowa Pride Network announced findings from its 2009 Iowa School Climate Survey (ISCS) today at the Iowa State Capitol. The 2009 survey is the first since the legislature passed the 2007 Safe Schools Law. The law requires schools to have anti-bullying and anti-harassment policies that protect all students including those that are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT).

“The 2009 ISCS reveals that LGBT bullying and harassment remain commonplace,” said Iowa Pride Network Co-Founder and Executive Director, Ryan Roemerman; “But it also makes clear that the law works when it is meaningfully implemented.”

Key findings from the 2009 Iowa Pride Network School Climate Survey show:

Many students do not know about Iowa’s Safe Schools Law regarding Bullying and Harassment:

54.2% of respondents reported that they do not know what the Iowa Safe Schools law is
71.9% reported that their school has not adopted the law
89.2% reported that the law is not posted at their school

Iowa’s LGBT students continue to feel unsafe in school and face verbal and physical harassment or assault daily and are more likely to consider suicide:

87.5% (91% in 07) of LGBT students in Iowa reported hearing homophobic remarks frequently in their schools.
78.4% (80% in 07) of LGBT students report being verbally harassed because of their sexual orientation.
37.5% (36% in 07) of Iowa LGBT students reported some incident of physical harassment (being pushed or shoved) because of their sexual orientation
20.5% (16% in 07) of students reported some incident of physical assault (being punched, kicked or injured with a weapon) because of their sexual orientation or gender expression.
56% of LGBT students are more likely than their straight peers to report that they had considered committing suicide

Three high school students,who attended the press conference, detailed their experiences as a LGBT or straight allied individual in Iowa schools. Stephen Wayne Boatwright, a senior at Hoover High School spoke of how he is fearful to walk down the halls after having glue smeared all over his locker. He is allergic to adhesives. Jozie Butler, a freshman at Southeast Polk High School, explained how she has been called names because of having gay friends. Evan Hay, a senior at Southeast Polk High School described how she is no longer allowed to attend her favorite class because a teacher is uncomfortable with her sexual orientation.

Despite their hardships, the students expressed their commitment to help educate others about how they can change their school’s climates.

“While I have been harassed, I know I have friends that support me. I also know that not all students have the support that I do. That is why I am here today, to let students know that they aren’t alone—and that there is a law that protects them,” stated Boatwright.

The study did find some areas of progress: Fewer students report being verbally harassed and more teachers and students are intervening when homophobic remarks are made in their presence. Most notably it found that in schools where the law was known by the student to have been adopted, students were 40% less likely to report hearing homophobic remarks used frequently or often in their schools.

“Bullying and harassment often starts with verbal harassment and often ends in physical violence. This law, if implemented can stop bullying and harassment before it starts,” explained Roemerman.

Iowa Pride Network is calling on schools to adopt programs that are recommended within the law, such as having student organizations that reduce harassment and trainings for teachers and students regarding the law. To educate students, Iowa Pride Network has created a “Make it Real” manual that will help students understand how to make the law real in their schools. The manual details how schools must follow the law and stop harassment and how students should report harassment when it happens.

“Our hope is that the manual will assist schools’ efforts in educating their students on the law.” Adding that, “Every one of us, students, schools, communities—must do all we can to create safe schools. We have the tools. We must have the resolve.”

The survey details how the majority of Iowa's LGBT students continue to feel unsafe in their schools and face verbal and physical harassment or assault daily. The survey also reveals positive signs of improvement in key areas, such as an increase in teachers intervening in bullying situations. New data surrounding students' thoughts on suicide will also be provided. Iowa Pride Network will share its recommendations on how to support schools to ensure they meet and exceed the standards set by the Iowa Safe Schools Law. Students from various high schools will also be in attendance to share personal experiences.

New "Thinking Queerly" Curriculum Debuts

To enhance and support local GSAs, Iowa Pride Network’s Regional Gay Straight Alliance Coalitions will begin meeting monthly starting in September. The coalitions reduce isolation that many LGBT students experience, educates students about LGBT history, people and events with our “Thinking Queerly” curriculum (only 16% of LGBT youth ever hear about this information in Iowa schools) and provides a refuge for students in schools who may not have a GSA.

The six coalitions are located in Des Moines, Iowa City, Cedar Falls, Mason City, Sioux City and Council Bluffs. Hundreds of students will utilize the coalitions this year!

The innovative “Thinking Queerly” curriculum used in the coalition meetings is now in its second edition and will be taught by IPN’s trained Leadership Team and Youth Council members. We know that students who are taught the curriculum increase their knowledge by an average of 30%. Last year, LGBT Youth and Mental Health; Future Leaders and Out Professionals; and understanding Power, Privilege and Oppression were rated the highest for knowledge increases.

An exciting development this year is the development of an online request form where individual GSAs can request specific monthly topics and supporting materials from our curriculum as a way to expand this resource at a local level.

This means that by completing a simple request form following a GSA Coalition meeting, GSA leaders can receive an emailed PDF version of that month’s curriculum that they can present partially or entirely to their Gay-Straight Alliance.

This is intended to provide GSAs with an active and accurate meeting agenda to bolster existing programming within the Gay-Straight Alliance. We strongly encourage GSA leaders to create additional and specialized programming to satisfy the unique needs of their school.

GSA Registration Drive set for Sept. 21-30

Iowa Pride Network is kicking off the year with our Annual Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) Registration Drive September 21-30! Volunteers will help call all of Iowa’s 400+ schools and 30+ colleges. Last year’s efforts yielded ten newly discovered GSAs and over a dozen additional schools that wanted to start one! GSAs—an alliance of LGBT and straight students working to end homophobia and transphobia—are the core of our work as they reduce physical violence towards LGBT students in schools.

Today, 1 out of 3 LGBT students in Iowa are physically harassed and assaulted and will skip at least two weeks of school this year because they are simply too afraid to go. Luckily, LGBT students who have a GSA in their school are 23% less likely to be physically assaulted and are much more likely to attend school.

The GSA Registration Drive helps IPN focus its efforts on schools who request support starting a GSA and providing resources to schools who want to create safe learning environments for all students.
